About the museum
The Hospitals de Sang interpretation centre in Batea is one of five interpretation centres on the sites of the Battle of the Ebro, managed by the Comebe consortium. The Battle of the Ebro was one of the most important episodes of the Spanish Civil War, a war in which health care played a prominent role and new methods of medical care emerged.
The exhibition explains how assistance to the wounded was organized and presents the medical network created around the battle. The Republic constantly innovated to make up for the shortcomings the war created, while the rebels inherited the existing health system, thanks to their superiority in means and resources. The network was structured from the front line to the rear, so that the civilian population was involved in the reality of the conflict.
Topics covered include war medicine, with a new system for classifying the wounded and treatments for bullet and shrapnel wounds; the mobilization of medical staff and of society as a whole, with civilian initiatives such as the blood transfusion bank and aid for combatants (auxilio al combatiente); and, finally, a comparison of the medical networks of two opposing units, the Republican 35th Division and the Francoist 50th Division, along with the evacuation route for the wounded.
