About the museum
The museum opened during the town's main festival on 15 August 1945, promoted by Vicenç Ros i Batllevell (1883-1970), who contributed his ceramic collection. It was initially furnished with ceramics and architectural pieces rescued from the parish church of Santa Maria, destroyed at the start of the Civil War. In 1946 Ros was appointed perpetual director, and the museum took his name after his donation of 1956. Later came other important donations, such as the bequest of Jaume Amat i Bargués in 2003.
The site occupies part of the former Capuchin convent, built between 1687 and 1721 on the Roca dels Archs, at the foot of the sierra de les Torretes. The museum uses the old church, some cells, the caretaker's house, the library, the cellar, the cistern and the storerooms. The building has been renovated in phases since 1989, and the ground floor reopened in 2005, coinciding with the museum's 60th anniversary.
The most important collection is the ceramics collection, which brings together the holdings of Ros and Mir, with about 350 pieces and around 15,000 Catalan and Valencian tiles. It is complemented by architectural elements, works by the Rigalt family, ethnology, archaeology from Santa Margarida and Sant Bartomeu, marine fossils and a documentary collection.
