About the museum
The museum was founded in 1946 on the basis of the private collection of Ignasi Abadal Soldevila, which the industrialist Josep Biosca acquired and donated to the city. It is the oldest museum in Terrassa and the first museum specialised in textiles in Spain. In the 1960s the Diputació de Barcelona bought the textile collection of Ricard Viñas; the city council and the Diputació then merged their holdings into a provincial museum, which opened in the current building in 1970. In 1988 a renovation project was launched.
Since 1995 the museum has operated as a consortium managed by the Diputació de Barcelona and Terrassa City Council, and in 2023 it was declared a Museum of National Interest. Its mission is to research, conserve, document and disseminate textile heritage, as well as to transfer knowledge and promote art and design.
The collections cover fabrics from many cultures and periods, from Egyptian textiles of the 1st century to contemporary garments and accessories: medieval, pre-Columbian and Oriental textiles, 18th-century silks, 19th- and 20th-century company sample books, haute couture, fans, shoes and bags. The modernist holdings stand out, which the museum has expanded and promoted since 2002, as does the IMATEX digital archive, with more than 32,000 records with images. Since 1990, temporary exhibitions have been at the heart of its public programme.
