About the museum
The Centro Arqueolóxico San Roque protects an archaeological complex a few metres from the Roman wall of Lugo and from the entrance to the city of the Camino Primitivo to Santiago. It consists of the remains of a Roman cemetery, a cult pool and a late ceramic kiln, all linked to the Roman road XIX, one of the historic routes that cross the city.
Two tombs belonging to a large cemetery that was in use for five centuries are preserved, documenting funerary rites of cremation and inhumation. Next to the cemetery and the access road, a large water pool in opus caementicium (Roman concrete) was built around the 1st century AD. It may have been related to the funerary cult or to some more complex religious cult in which eastern deities were present, as indicated by the reliefs over which the water flowed.
The presence of a kiln for making pottery attests to the industrial use of the area at the end of the 5th century AD. The site lies about seven or eight metres below street level and is visited with audiovisual support.
