About the museum
The museum was founded in 1917 or 1918 on the initiative of the priest Alfredo Lorenzo López and presents itself as the dean of Galician museums. It was first housed in the Seminary of Lugo and, in the 1990s, its holdings were moved to the cathedral, where the diocesan and cathedral collections were brought together. After renovation works lasting about three years, it reopened in 2017 with a new museographic approach.
The permanent exhibition occupies the triforium, the chapter house and the antechamber of the archive, and is completed by the cloister, designed by Fernando de Casas Novoa between 1708 and 1714, where the stone collection is displayed. The route is organised into seven sections and brings together more than 600 pieces: archaeological remains from prehistory to the arrival of Rome, evidence of early Christianity in Lugo, the medieval construction of the cathedral, Marian images, liturgical goldsmith's work, Baroque devotional imagery and a painting gallery.
Among the best-known pieces are a replica of the Quiroga crismón, from the 5th century, the Saamasas chancel screen, from the 7th century, a Gothic chalice of Bishop Baamonde and a monstrance donated in 1636. The visit can be completed with a walk around the cathedral's roofs, with views of the city, the Camino Primitivo and the Roman wall.
