About the museum
The Museum of Public Health and Hygiene belongs to the Carlos III Health Institute and began to take shape in 1995. It is located in Pavilion 14 of the Chamartín campus, in the so-called Edificio del Reloj (Clock Building). It brings together objects, books and documents on the history and development of public health in Spain.
Its holdings include a reconstruction of an early 20th-century bacteriological laboratory, microscopes and equipment used against infectious diseases and infant mortality, photographs, paintings and some industrially manufactured medicines. It also preserves the documentary archive of the former Dirección General de Sanidad (Directorate General of Public Health) and the archive of clinical records from the former Hospitales Nacionales de Enfermedades Infecciosas (National Hospitals for Infectious Diseases).
Visits are guided and arranged in advance. They are aimed at researchers, professionals, students and anyone interested in the history of public health. They rely largely on a volunteer programme of research and teaching staff from the Escuela Nacional de Sanidad (National School of Public Health).
