About the museum
The centre occupies the Anduetza farmhouse, in the San Bartolomé district of Zegama, the town that serves as the entrance to the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park. It operates as a parketxe (park house) and explores the close relationship Zegama has maintained with the mountain throughout history.
The permanent exhibition is spread over several floors. The ground floor presents a route from the coast, following the old medieval royal road (camino real), up to the summit of Aizkorri, then focuses on Zegama and the Parzonería General de Gipuzkoa y Álava, and ends with an audiovisual titled “La voz del bosque” (“The Voice of the Forest”). The upper floor is devoted to pollarded trees, the relationship between people and the forest, traditional crafts and the knowledge accumulated in the region. A separate section presents the San Adrián pass (Leizarrate), a site of great strategic value in different periods.
In the basement there is a collection of more than 173 species of trunks from all over the world and a xylotheque with more than 1,500 wooden samples from five continents, assembled by Imanol Artola. The building also has a library, video rooms, a conference room and a shop selling local products.
