About the museum
The Ecomuseo del Pastoreo is housed in the Erraizabal (also spelled Erreizabal) farmhouse, a 16th-century house in the Telleriarte district of Legazpi, which still operates as a livestock and cheese farm. It presents pastoral activity and the making of Idiazabal cheese in its natural setting.
The museum occupies the farmhouse loft (about 160 m²) and is divided into two spaces. The first is an audiovisual presentation, “El pastoreo ayer y hoy” (Herding Yesterday and Today), which recreates the landscape shaped by the shepherd and the management of livestock through the seasons. The second is the permanent exhibition, which covers the physical environment, transhumance, borda herding, sheepfolds (majadas) and shepherds' huts (txabolas pastoriles), the latxa sheep breed and its life cycle, the shepherd's trade, and the artisan production of Idiazabal cheese, both traditional and contemporary.
The visit is guided and may include taking part in cheese-making and a shepherd's pintxo with cheese, bread and cider. Cheese made on the farm can also be bought. In spring, when the lambs are born, the visit is especially appealing.
