About the museum

The cicLaC opened on 31 October 2012 and is a pioneering exhibition space in Spain. Together with the Museo de la Historia Urbana, it forms the network of municipal museums of Avilés. To set it up, the former caretaker's and chaplain's houses were renovated, which also recovered, on the outside of the cemetery, the original design by the architect Ricardo Marcos Bausá, who drew up the cemetery project in 1890.

The exhibition uses panels to explain the historical context in which the cemetery was built at the end of the 19th century and its main artistic features, with works by Cipriano Folgueras, Manuel del Busto or Federico Ureña, and the notable people from Avilés buried there, such as Armando Palacio Valdés. The old cemeteries of the city and the other two cemeteries in the municipality are also mentioned.

Several display cases show facsimiles of vault designs, burial requests from the mid-19th century and unbuilt projects from the municipal archive, and two audiovisual presentations cover the European Route of Significant Cemeteries and the cemetery itself. With a map, visitors can follow the “Espacio de arte” and “Lugar de memoria” routes through the cemetery, which is considered the largest open-air museum in Avilés.
