About the museum
The Espacio Portus occupies a former riverside shipyard in San Juan de Nieva, in Avilés, converted into the Interpretation Centre of the Port of Avilés. It aims to make the history of the port known through education and heritage, and is aimed both at local residents and at visitors.
The route follows the evolution of the estuary and the port: from its medieval origins as a salt and fishing port, through the prominence of coal, steel and bulk cargo, to the present day, with sectors such as the wind-power industry and zinc. To complete the visit, two one-hour educational walking itineraries are organised daily along the promenade on the right bank of the estuary, between San Juan de Nieva and the Peña del Caballo.
The same space houses the Interpretation Centre of the Avilés Submarine Canyons, devoted to the Gran Sima de Avilés, one of the most unusual and least known places on the Cantabrian coast. It recreates these canyons with interactive imagery, augmented and virtual reality, holograms and 3D models, in a highly immersive experience.
