About the museum
The Centro Niemeyer grew out of the link between the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and Asturias, where he received the Prince of Asturias Award in 1989. In 2006, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Prince of Asturias Foundation, he began to sketch the first curves of the project with a thick marker. The foundation stone was laid in 2008.
The complex is organised around a large square, with a multipurpose building, an auditorium of about 1,000 seats, a dome of sprayed concrete of about 4,000 m² for exhibitions and artistic activities, and a tower of about 20 metres with an external spiral staircase. Niemeyer regarded it as his most important and most beloved work outside Brazil; it is his only work in Spain.
The programme is supported by the Principality of Asturias, Avilés City Council, the Port Authority of Avilés and the Ministry of Culture and Sport. The centre has no permanent exhibition; the visit combines the architecture, the temporary exhibitions in the dome and guided tours.
