About the museum

The Museo de Anclas Philippe Cousteau is an open-air installation on the La Peñona peninsula, at one end of Salinas beach (Castrillón). It pays tribute to the people who dedicated their lives to protecting marine ecosystems, represented by Philippe Cousteau, and it is registered as a Centro Azul.

The complex brings together a 90-metre-long deck with six steel-sheet sails, from which anchor chains rest on the platform; a bronze bust of Philippe Cousteau by the sculptor Vicente Menéndez-Santarúa Prendes, placed on the Peña Lisa rock; and a large ceramic mural in the entrance square that serves as an introduction.

Among the pieces on display are anchors from well-known ships, including one linked to the galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank off Florida in 1622, and that of the merchant ship Castillo de Salas, which ran aground near Gijón in 1986. The Temple of the Oceans is a compass rose into which water from the world’s oceans is poured, next to a bowl-shaped viewpoint over the sea.
