About the museum
The Museo de la Historia Urbana de Avilés (MHUA) opened its doors in 2013 on Calle de La Ferrería, in the heart of the historic centre, opposite the church of San Nicolás de Bari, now the conventual church of the Franciscan Fathers, and opposite the Centro Niemeyer. It is part of the city's network of municipal museums, together with the interpretation centre of the La Carriona cemetery.
The visit begins on the top floor, under the roof, with a summary of Avilés's history and a large window overlooking the Centro Niemeyer. The second floor presents the medieval town, with the charter (fuero) granted by Alfonso VI in 1085 and confirmed some years later by Alfonso VII, and the early modern town, with its palaces and illustrious figures.
The route ends on the first floor, devoted to the bourgeois town of the 19th century, marked by the return of the indianos from Cuba, and to the industrial city of the 20th century, transformed by the arrival of ENSIDESA. The display is organised into four chapters (the medieval town, the early modern town, the bourgeois town and the industrial city) and draws on original objects, replicas and interactive resources, with the ría (estuary) as its common thread.
