About the museum
The centre occupies the first floor of the Puerta del Mar building in San Juan de la Arena (L'Arena), in the municipality of Soto del Barco. It was the town’s former Casa del Mar and also houses the Oficina de Turismo de Soto del Barco, the offices of the Consorcio Bajo Nalón and a space for travelling exhibitions. On the second floor is a viewpoint over the final stretch of the estuary and the sandbar of San Esteban de Pravia. The official opening took place on 10 July 2010.
The permanent exhibition covers the environmental characteristics of the Ría del Nalón and the ethnographic culture of the municipality. A large part of the route is devoted to the elver (angula) and its complex life cycle, as well as to salmon fishing.
Other sections recall the coal depots (carboneras), which collected coal at the mouth of the Nalón, and the fish canneries, which were among the economic engines of the area until the last third of the 20th century.
