About the museum
The centre occupies the former district prison (cárcel de partido) of Sepúlveda, a building erected from 1543 onwards, situated between the now-vanished Arco de la Villa and the wall towers. The Tourist Office is also in the same building.
Since 2014 it has housed a permanent educational exhibition of about 400 m² on deprivation of liberty, the lives of prisoners and the administration of justice in past centuries. It deals with confinement in the broad sense: not only that of prisoners, but also that of people who were confined, voluntarily or by force, in palaces, walled cities and convents.
The visit is spread over three floors. The ground floor covers the history of the building and prison literature, with a model of the town; the first floor presents different forms of confinement (women's confinement, monastic confinement and that in walled towns); and the third floor recreates life in the Sepúlveda prison over the last two centuries. There are interactive panels, sound and visual recreations and games designed for children.
