About the museum
The Museo Prerrománico de Santianes opened to the public in spring 2007 in the former rectory, which the architect Miguel Cinos rehabilitated for this purpose. Its aim is to show the pieces found in the excavations that José Menéndez Pidal directed in the church of Santianes in 1975. Specialists in Asturian pre-Romanesque art consider them very valuable, and the museum was the first place where they were displayed after their recovery.
The museum is at the entrance to the village of Santianes de Pravia, next to the pre-Romanesque church. The exhibition is organised in six sections: the labyrinth stone, the candelero, the gravestone with palace, the altar and the chancel screens (canceles), chancel fragments and educational content.
