About the museum
La Quinta de Selgas, in the locality of El Pito next to Cudillero, is the country house that the brothers Ezequiel and Fortunato de Selgas Albuerne decorated at the end of the 19th century with a large collection of works of art. Dissatisfied with the shortcomings of the old house, they planned a new building, work on which began in 1884; its architecture recalls Italian secular architecture of the 16th century. The interior was furnished with pieces from their own era and from earlier centuries, acquired in Spain and other European countries.
The gardens, inspired by French, Italian and English styles, were designed by Fortunato de Selgas in 1864, although they were not carried out until about two decades later. Next to the house stands the neoclassical pavilion which, after a reform in the fifties, houses nine tapestries made in Brussels in the 16th and 17th centuries.
In 1915 the family founded the Escuelas Selgas, a charitable and educational institution for children from the nearby villages. Today the School Museum displays teaching materials used in the first half of the 20th century. In the same year the church-mausoleum of Jesús Nazareno, in Neo-Romanesque style, was inaugurated.
The estate was the family's temporary residence until 1992. The Fundación Selgas-Fagalde, established in 1991, has the mission of preserving this legacy and making it known. The ensemble remains a kind of historic bubble of an enlightened bourgeois family.
