Centro de Interpretación del Camino de Santiago
Interpretation centre on Calle Mayor in Orio about the Camino de Santiago, with interactive modules and audiovisuals on three floors; temporarily closed.
Have only individual sections read aloud
About the museum
The interpretation centre is on Calle Mayor in Orio, a town that grew in the 12th and 13th centuries thanks to its position on the Coastal Camino de Santiago: pilgrims crossed the River Oria here on their way to Zarautz and enjoyed a royal exemption from the crossing toll. According to a guide to the Camino, the centre is housed in a 16th-century manor house.
Its exhibition offers detailed information about the whole of the Camino de Santiago and is spread over three floors. The ground floor houses the information office and the tourist office; the first floor is devoted to the history and current situation of the Camino, to pilgrimage and to the art and legends associated with it; the second floor focuses on the Coastal and Interior routes as they pass through the Basque Country.
The centre has interactive modules in several languages, audiovisual presentations, educational material and a video room with capacity for 50 people.
