About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación del Megalitismo de Gorafe completed the Gorafe Megalithic Park, in the Guadix comarca, in 2011. At more than 600 m² it is the largest interpretation centre in the province of Granada. Construction began in 2002, and the centre is run by Gorafe Town Council.
The building, of striking design, imitates the shape of a megalithic tomb, with its chamber and access passage, and is largely underground, like the dolmens themselves. The five exhibition spaces are linked by a helical ramp and use modern audiovisual technologies to explain what megalithism is, when and in what cultural context it emerged, and how the societies that built the monuments lived.
The route places the visitor in the Gor river basin during the Chalcolithic (Copper Age), with information on daily life, burials and the tools of the period. Among the highlights is an engraved orthostat (an upright stone slab) from dolmen 77, which may represent a shaman. Gorafe has eleven necropolises and more than 242 dolmens, and the centre complements the park’s three signposted routes, which allow visitors to see more than sixty tombs.
