About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación Cuevas de Guadix, also known as Cueva Museo, is run by the Tourism Department of Guadix Town Council. It occupies the interior of several original cave dwellings in a privileged setting in the Barrio de Cuevas, where the houses dug into the clay slopes date back to the 16th century.
The visit is a journey to the origins of the quarter and its evolution through history. It shows how people lived in these houses, with their rooms for different uses, including stables for animals. It is complemented by audiovisual projections and numerous objects related to rural life, traditional crafts and local customs.
The house on display commemorates the Cruz Úbeda family, the last owners of the house between 1928 and 1980. The route is led by a character, Pedro, the master cave-digger (maestro picaor de cuevas), who together with other characters helps to evoke daily life in these unusual houses in the not-so-distant past.
