About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación Astrofísica y Medioambiental de Gérgal opened in 2011, after two years of building work, with the aim of becoming the visitor centre of the Calar Alto observatory, the former Spanish-German Astronomical Centre. It was built on a plot in the town centre of Gérgal, opposite the hermitage of San Sebastián.
The building has an auditorium, an exhibition area, an interpretation room, interactive computer points and a planetarium, now called the Planetario de Gérgal, which together with the one in Serón are the only planetariums in the province of Almería. The planetarium holds fifty people per session and is used by schools, the general public and sky enthusiasts.
Visits and activities are organised by the Planetarios de Serón: planetarium sessions with film or live presentations, daytime observations of the Sun and night-time observations, as well as workshops, combined with pre-arranged visits for families, groups and educational centres.
