About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Terque is part of the Museos de Terque, a group of venues in the Almería village that is sustained by collaboration between the town council and the Asociación Amigos de los Museos de Terque, founded in 2002 by local residents. Its origins go back to the 1980s, when the furniture of a closed bakery was saved, and most of the collections come from donations by residents of Terque and neighbouring villages.
The museum is in one of the middle-class houses from the late 19th century owned by the town council, spread over two floors. It shows the trades and domestic life of Terque and its district through re-created scenes of a grocer's, a tobacconist's, a barber's, an apothecary's, a kitchen, a pantry, a cooperage, a bedroom, a bakery and a school. A video space, “El Armario de las Almas” (The Cupboard of Souls), presents everyday stories of ordinary people. In 2006 it received provisional entry in the Andalusian Museum Network.
The guided tour continues through the Museo Provincial de la Uva del Barco, La Modernista, the Museo de la Escritura Popular and the Cueva de San José. The museums closed for two months in 2024 for lack of funding and reopened in August of that year after a campaign of support from residents and businesses.
