About the museum
Pechina was the historical capital of the Bajo Andarax valley. Towards the end of the 9th century the city of Bayyana developed there, the core of the so-called Maritime Republic of Bayyana, proclaimed in 891 and capital of the third kora of the Emirate of Córdoba. It was one of the most important trading cities of Al-Andalus in the 9th and 10th centuries, and it declined when, around 955, Abd al-Rahman III built the Alcazaba of Almería and moved the caliphal fleet there.
The Bayyana Interpretation Centre presents the Hispano-Muslim archaeological site through pieces found there and across five spaces: the social and urban organisation of the city, with two recreated houses; the spiritual world, with the mosque and the Sufi school; the economy, with the silk and pottery industries; water and agriculture; and trading relations.
The Popular Culture Interpretation Centre works like a time tunnel back to the era of grandparents. The objects room displays everyday items from Pechina’s recent past alongside photographs of its present appearance; another room recreates traditional trades such as those of the barrel-maker (barrilero), tailor, broom-maker, carpenter, railway worker, esparto worker and cinema operator; and a third, devoted to the estrío (esparto fibre processing) at the former La Molina factory, includes a large cyclorama and coplas sung by the women who did that work. Visits are coordinated by the Club de Pechina para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura, in collaboration with the town council.
