About the museum

The Tabernas interpretation centre shows, across two rooms, how Europe’s only desert was formed and how one of the first complex societies to inhabit it lived alongside this arid environment: the Chalcolithic society of the Millares type, which occupied the desert in the third millennium BC at the settlement of Terrera Ventura, within the municipal area of Tabernas.

Access is through an introductory video that offers a journey in time from the present to the third millennium BC. The first room brings together panels on Chalcolithic society in Almería and, in particular, the society that lived in Terrera Ventura, with archaeological replicas that help explain its ways of life. The settlement was excavated in the seventies of the 20th century by Francesc Gusi i Gener.

The second room covers the geological formation of the Tabernas desert, its endemic features, its fauna and flora, and compares it with other deserts around the world. An exhibition of fossils helps explain the geological processes and the erosion that characterise this landscape.
