About the museum
Mining was an economic driver of the Almería Alpujarra between the late 18th and early 20th century, and the municipality of Beires had some of the most important mines in the comarca. That is why the Plan Turístico de la Alpujarra almeriense funded the enhancement of this mining heritage. The interpretation centre opened in 2017 and is run by Beires town council and the Diputación Provincial de Almería.
It is a museum room of about 146 square metres, bringing together audiovisuals and utensils typical of the mines. In the videos, people who worked in them recount their experiences, customs and way of life. Plans and photographs also explain how iron reached the Doña María area by aerial ropeway.
A tour of the village, the “Museo Abierto de Historia de la Minería”, can also be arranged, with six stops where scenes cut from sheet metal and explanatory panels tell the story of iron mining in the 20th century. It passes the chapel, the pelota court, the hopper and several houses, and a trail of medium-to-high difficulty allows visitors to see the mines of the Beires mountains.
