About the museum
The museum was created in 2007 and belongs to the Extremadura Identity Museums Network. Its aim is to make known pimentón, the “red gold” of the La Vera region, and its role in the life and economy of the area.
It is housed in the former Palacio del Obispo Manzano, on the Plaza Mayor of Jaraíz de la Vera. The building, rectangular and three storeys high, was built in the second half of the 17th century by the parents of Juan Domingo Manzano Carvajal, who was born in Jaraíz in 1675 and became bishop of Jaca. The family coat of arms is preserved on the main façade. The three floors are linked by a lift and have no architectural barriers.
The tour begins with an animated video that tells how the pepper reached Europe with Christopher Columbus, and the legend of Tía Maína, supposedly the woman who accidentally invented Pimentón de La Vera. It then explains the types of pepper and pimentón, the documents of the Denomination of Origin, old tins and, on the upper floor, the drying in the secaderos (drying houses) and the machinery used to harvest and grind. The museum also hosts craft, painting and photography exhibitions.
