About the museum
The Luarca giant squid collection began at the end of the 20th century, when the first specimen arrived in 1997, nicknamed “el peludín” (the little hairy one) by sailors, and it is linked to the history of CEPESMA and the Aula del Mar de Luarca. In 2010 a first interpretation centre opened on the Muelle Nuevo, displaying several specimens.
On 2 February 2014 an unprecedented storm flooded the building and destroyed its first two floors. After several years of closure, the museum reopened in 2022 in a new building on Calle Nicanor del Campo.
The new space allows visitors to immerse themselves in the seabed and in the habitat of the largest cephalopods in the world, with their prey and predators, in the depths of the Cantabrian Sea. It offers a didactic exhibition with more than ten specimens of different giant squid species, a separate route for adults and children, games and interactives, the first recording of a live giant squid in its natural habitat, and a sensory experience of light and sound. The setting pays tribute to the Nobel laureate from Luarca, Severo Ochoa.
