About the museum
The museum occupies an 18th-century building that was the priory house of the monastery of San Martiño Pinario in Santiago de Compostela, and was used to produce and distribute wine. After the disentailment of church property it became the rectory of Santo André de Camporredondo. In the 20th century it fell into disuse and was partly looted; it was rehabilitated between 1988 and 1990, and the Xunta de Galicia took it over in 2005.
The museum design was developed between 2017 and 2018 and the museum was officially opened in 2019. Its mission is to recover, document, conserve and share Galicia's wine heritage. The winery stands out, with stone treading vats (lagares) and two galleries cut into the rock that predate the building.
The permanent exhibition is spread over eight rooms and two transition spaces across three floors. It covers the creation of the wine landscape, work in the vineyard, the five designations of origin and the authorised grape varieties, the history of the Ribeiro, monastic viticulture, the arrival of the grapes at the winery, the treading vats and the transformation of must into wine.
