About the museum

The museum opened in 1989 as a tribute to the priest Ramón María Aller Ulloa, an astronomer and mathematician born in Lalín in 1878 and died in 1966. It occupies his former residence, a 19th-century building that housed the first astronomical observatory in Galicia. His study, furniture and the instruments Aller used are preserved, as well as documents, photographs and many books from his personal library.

From 2011 the observatory was restored, with a new telescope for night observations and the refurbishment of the dome, for which the original timber was reused.

The museum also pays tribute to two other distinguished people from Lalín. Joaquín Loriga (Lalín, 1895 – Madrid, 1927), a pioneer of Spanish aviation, has a permanent collection of personal objects. The painter Xosé Otero Abeledo, Laxeiro (Lalín, 1908 – Vigo, 1996), donated the 37 works on display. Since 1993 the temporary exhibition room has hosted the Bienal Internacional Pinto Laxeiro in odd-numbered years, along with other exhibitions, presentations, concerts and talks.
