About the museum
The museum is on the Calle Ancha in Estepa, in a building that, according to tourist information, was built in 1636 as a school, became a prison in 1702 and was again a school, run by a religious order, at the start of the 20th century. It is named after Father Martín Recio. According to the town council, the museum opened around 1990, and in 2020 it was refurbished to remove architectural barriers.
The collection brings together finds from Estepa and its surroundings, ranging from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic, with stone tools and hand-made pottery, to Orientalising pottery and materials from the Punic, Roman, Early Christian, Visigothic and Andalusi periods. The most outstanding piece is a Roman sculpture of Hypnos, the god of sleep, from the 2nd century AD.
The 2020 refurbishment added a lift between the two floors, adapted toilets and a hydraulic wheelchair platform, while keeping the building's original layout.
