About the museum

The Colección museográfica del Automóvil brings together the holdings of the former Escuela de Automovilismo del Ejército de Tierra (Army Motoring School), founded in 1931 and based in Villaverde (Madrid) after the Civil War. When the school closed in 1987, the items passed to the Army Logistics School (Escuela de Logística del Ejército), where the first exhibition room opened in November 1998. In 2005 it was decided to move the collection to the Parque y Centro de Mantenimiento de Vehículos de Ruedas n.º 1, a unit installed in Torrejón de Ardoz since 1942, which took over its custody. The museum was formally inaugurated on 17 May 2007.

In 2013, during an open day to mark the 75th anniversary of the unit, the museum opened to the public for the first time and a system of visits was established. In 2015, the ministerial order that created the Red de Museos de Defensa recognised these holdings as a museum collection of the Ministry of Defence.

The collection shows how the motor vehicle has evolved in the military field over more than a century: cars, trucks, motorcycles, engines and other components. Highlights include the Bilbao armoured car of 1932, which took part in the Civil War, a 1941 Willys Jeep, a 1934 Henschel truck that arrived with the Condor Legion, and an electric-solar vehicle built on the chassis of a 1932 Citroën Pato. On the upper floor of the former offices there is a library with manuals and documentation on motoring.
