About the museum
The Museo de la Ciudad de Torrejón de Ardoz opened its doors in March 2011 to present the history of the municipality from its first settlers, around 5000 BC, to the present day. It occupies the Herrería, an emblematic building that had been abandoned and was restored while keeping its original structure and adding a modern element. The project also created the Plaza and the Plazoleta del Museo, where a mural by local artist Manuel Ojeda depicts what Torrejón looked like at the beginning of the 18th century.
The permanent exhibition spreads over two floors covering more than 600 square metres. The ground floor is devoted to the period from the Palaeolithic to the 11th and 12th centuries and includes part of the Soto Henares archaeological site with three reproduced burials, as well as Carpetanian and Roman pieces and a room on medieval Torrejón. The first floor covers the period from the 12th century to the present: the privileges that made the town a realengo (royal jurisdiction) settlement, the battle of Torrejón between Espartero and Narváez, the arrival of the air base and the industrial and demographic growth of the 20th century.
The museum is completed by a floor for temporary exhibitions, giving priority to local themes and artists from the city, and by the Casa-Museo de Gigantes y Cabezudos, located on floor -1.
