About the museum
The complex consists of the Convent of Santa Clara with its church and the Palace of Pedro I, which today houses a museum. The convent was founded in the mid-14th century by María de Padilla, a close associate of King Pedro I of Castile. The church, formerly known as Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, combines Gothic and Mudéjar elements and preserves a coffered ceiling (artesonado) and a Renaissance high altarpiece.
The palace, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, displays Mudéjar architecture with horseshoe-shaped polylobed arched windows, and is compared with the royal palace of Tordesillas and the Royal Alcázars of Seville. Part of its rooms have been turned into a museum, where alfarjes (Mudéjar carved ceilings), yeserías (ornamental plasterwork), carvings, goldsmithing, painting and sculpture, coins, choir books and documents are displayed, as well as a collection of more than two hundred nativity scenes.
The monastery is still enclosed, so visitors only see the church and the museum.
