About the museum
The Cueva de Siete Palacios is a large central stone vault crossed by seven smaller vaults, probably built in the 1st century AD as the substructure of a platform on which a Roman building stood. It lies on the Cerro de San Miguel, in the old town of Almuñécar. Excavations in 1981 and 1982 documented a sequence of occupation running from the Late Bronze Age and the Phoenician, Punic and Iberian periods to the Roman, Early Christian and Islamic periods.
The structure has housed the Museo Arqueológico de Almuñécar since 1984. Its rooms bring together remains of the past of ancient Sexi, such as those from the Puente de Noy and Laurita necropolises and from the salting factory of El Majuelo, as well as ceramics, jewellery and fibulae.
The best-known piece is a solid quartz Egyptian vessel from the 17th century BC, with hieroglyphic inscriptions linking it to the pharaoh Apofis I.
