About the museum
The museum stands over the last remains of the Ingenio de la Palma, one of the most important sugar mills in Motril since the end of the Middle Ages. The first records of this royal mill date back to the late 15th century; it had horizontal mills for grinding the cane. Over time almost all of its structure disappeared, except for the house, and its memory was forgotten.
In 1989, during the levelling of the plot behind the Casa de la Palma, large carved stones appeared, which led to an emergency excavation and then a systematic one, bringing to light walls and elements of the factory. The town council decided to rehabilitate the remains: the project was commissioned from the Granada architect Federico Salmerón, works began in late 1996 and finished in autumn 1998.
The museum display was carried out by the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa Tropical de Granada, which drew up the project from November 2000 and completed the work in December 2002. The museum shows the process of sugar production and trade between the 13th and 18th centuries, with full-scale reproductions of the mills and presses and of the boiling and purging rooms for the sugar loaves. It preserves the oldest trapiche (cane mill) in Europe and is part of the RECTA network of science and technology outreach venues.
