About the museum
The Museo de Nerja is conceived as a reference centre for the town, its history and its natural and cultural heritage. It is promoted and run by the Fundación Cueva de Nerja, although it was created to operate with a degree of independence. Its guiding theme is local history from prehistory to the present day; it also hosts concerts, theatre, children's workshops and book launches, so it is also a cultural meeting point for the Axarquía comarca.
The permanent exhibition occupies five rooms and is based on archaeological and ethnographic pieces, historical documents, photographs, plans and models, with videos and explanatory panels. The route begins with an introductory video and continues through the historical periods from the Phoenicians to the 16th century, with particular attention to the Roman and Andalusi periods. It then shows 18th-century Nerja, with the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, Manuel Centurión's paper mill and the Libro del Privilegio, and contemporary Nerja, which includes sugar cane, the discovery of the cave in 1959, the cinema and the series “Verano azul”, and the beginnings of tourism.
On the lower floor, the museum displays finds from the research in the Cueva de Nerja, such as the Epipalaeolithic skeleton “Pepita”, more than 9,900 years old, tools, ornaments, Neolithic and Chalcolithic pottery and reproductions of cave paintings. The museum also has a temporary exhibition room with free admission, and a historical library and archive for researchers.
