About the museum
The Museo de Historia de Motril occupies the Casa Garcés, a 16th- and 17th-century building on calle Cardenal Belluga that belonged to the journalist José Garcés Herrera. After a complete refurbishment, costing about €1.3 million and funded by the Proteja plan of the Junta de Andalucía, it reopened on 25 June 2026.
The route is organised into ten thematic sections, starting with the first settlers and the Islamic period and running up to the Civil War and the future of the city. It combines objects and documents with digital resources: screens with videos in several languages, LED lighting, virtual re-creations and 3D projections of the old Mutrayil.
The museum has a reception room, an inner courtyard, a room for temporary exhibitions and the room on Territorio y Tiempo (Territory and Time).
