About the museum
The Museo Histórico Villa de Salobreña occupies the first floor of the former town hall building, on the town hall square, in the heart of the historic quarter. It offers a route through almost six thousand years of human history in the territory of Salobreña, based on archaeological and historical research and on material, written, cartographic and photographic evidence.
The Archaeology Room displays remains from several sites in the municipality, from the Neolithic and the Copper and Bronze Ages to the Phoenician and Punic colonisation and the Roman period, as well as medieval ceramics, two models of the surroundings of the lower Guadalfeo and of the formation of the coastline, and a photographic display of Salobreña in the 20th century. In the basement, the former Cárcel Real (Royal Prison), dating from the 16th century, is preserved, with a 17th-century artillery piece from the castle and four catapult projectiles.
