About the museum
The Jardín Museo del Bonsái opened in December 2008 in the Plaza de Marruecos, next to the Avenida de Andalucía. It was created to make the Japanese art of bonsai known and to keep this hobby alive in Almuñécar, and it hosts exhibitions, days and courses for enthusiasts. It is maintained by the Asociación Amigos del Bonsái Costa Tropical.
The site, about 1,800 square metres, has two types of garden, a wet garden and a dry or Zen garden, and is visited across several levels. The entrance is from Calle Andrés Muller, through a Japanese torii gate. Inside you can see garden lanterns, the carp pond, fountains inspired by Buddhism, centuries-old trees and more than a hundred bonsai, including Mediterranean species such as olive, wild olive, almond, pomegranate, holm oak and cork oak, as well as conifers, tropical and Asian plants, fruit trees and flowering species.
