About the museum
The Cueva-Museo Etnográfico de Cuevas del Almanzora occupies a genuine excavated dwelling in a historic part of the village, next to the 19th-century drinking-water tanks and at the foot of the Calvario hermitage. The space shows how people lived in cave houses in the mid-20th century and brings together furniture, kitchenware, domestic utensils, farm implements and tools of traditional crafts.
Caves have been part of the municipality since ancient times: there are prehistoric cavities estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000 years old, and they were also inhabited in the Islamic period. With the mining operations of Almagrera and Herrerías, population growth led to the widespread occupation of this type of housing. Today cave houses remain much-valued homes and rural accommodation, with an average interior temperature of around 20 degrees.
The museum aims to present this way of life in an educational manner, as part of the local heritage and cultural legacy. Its admission is included in the pass for the municipal museums of Cuevas del Almanzora.
