About the museum
The museum is named after Antonio Manuel Campoy, born in Cuevas del Almanzora in 1924 and died in Madrid in 1993. A graduate in Philosophy and Letters, he was a prominent art critic and collector. He published his reviews for years in the newspaper ABC and wrote more than fifty works on Spanish art. His widow, Rosa María Sáez Prol, donated the collections to the Cuevas del Almanzora town council so that they could form the museum, which opened its doors on 24 November 1984.
The museum is housed in the castle of the Marqués de los Vélez. It occupies the area linking the north-western fortresses, built between the 13th and 16th centuries to defend the stronghold. Local tourist information places the rooms in the palace of the marquis, built between 1517 and 1521. The Tourist Office is located within the same complex.
The holdings bring together more than two hundred paintings, drawings and prints, more than a hundred sculptures, historical documents, ethnographic pieces and a library of some 1,300 volumes. The route is spread over the ground floor and the first floor, with about ten rooms devoted to the life and work of Campoy and to his artistic and cultural surroundings. Alongside painting and sculpture, archaeological pieces and historical furniture are also displayed.
