About the museum
The Museo Taller Emilio Sdun is dedicated to the typographer, calligrapher and printer of Saxon origin Emilio Sdun, who settled with his wife Doris in the village of Los Guiraos, where he set up his Imprenta Cicuta (Cicuta Press). After his death, Doris bequeathed to the municipality all of their artistic and publishing output, together with the machines and tools with which the couple had worked.
The museum opened in February 2022 on the ground floor of the former building of the Sindicato de Riegos (irrigation association), on Calle del Farol. It displays his editions, illustrated with texts by classic authors and contemporary writers, and a collection of typographic posters. His workshop has also been recreated, with presses, tórculos (copperplate presses) and chivaletes (type stands) holding thousands of movable type pieces moved from Los Guiraos.
The idea behind the “taller” (workshop) is that the space stays alive: the room is used for activities in which the machines work again and the printing techniques that Sdun mastered, such as lithography, linocut and screen printing, are taught. It depends on the Cuevas del Almanzora town council and is brought to life by the Asociación Cultural Legado Emilio Sdun.
