About the museum
The Municipal Archaeological Museum is located within the castle complex of the Marqués de los Vélez, next to the Museo Antonio Manuel Campoy. Local tourist information places it in the Casa de la Tercia, a neoclassical-looking building on the west side of the castle, built in 1773 as a granary where residents handed over their tithes to the marquis. The same building houses the Álvarez de Sotomayor municipal library and a room for temporary exhibitions.
The collection focuses on the Argaric culture of the Bronze Age. Many pieces come from the settlement of Fuente Álamo, which was inhabited for more than six hundred years, between roughly 4,000 and 3,300 years ago. Others were found by the engineer and archaeologist Luis Siret at sites in the region.
The rooms explain the territory, the settlement, and the life and death of its inhabitants.
