About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Orozko, also known as Orozkoko Museoa, occupies the Legorburu manor house (casa palacio), an 18th-century stately building better known as Casa Kareaga. It is located on the main square of Orozko, a few metres from the town hall, and the Gorbeia tourist office is also housed inside.
The collection is spread over three floors, each with its own theme: the historical heritage of the Orozko valley, traditional life in the valley, and the inhabitants of the Gorbeia highlands, namely shepherds, woodcutters and charcoal burners. In this way the museum reconstructs the past of the valley clearly and engagingly.
It is conceived as an interactive and participatory museum, designed for family visits, with audiovisual media and models. The museum also extends beyond the building: many of the elements seen in the models and photographs, such as stelae, ice houses (neveras), caves and ericeras (heath-cutting areas), are preserved in the valley and in the Gorbeia Natural Park, and the museum proposes routes to visit them.
