About the museum
The Museo del Hierro Vasco occupies a converted industrial building in Mirandaola park, in the Telleriarte district of Legazpi. It is part of the Territorio Lenbur of the Lenbur Foundation, created in 1997 to highlight the natural and cultural heritage and the iron industry, and it is the starting point of the tourism and culture offer known as El Valle del Hierro (The Iron Valley).
The exhibition explains, with models and audiovisuals, the technological, historical, scientific, social and landscape aspects that made iron a driving force for the region. Old trades are presented, such as those of the ferrón (ironworker), the miner and the charcoal burner; the last is illustrated with a full-size charcoal kiln that shows how hard the work was.
In the same park are the Ferrería de Mirandaola, which is fired up on certain dates to show ironworking as it was done in the 16th century, and the Capilla de Mirandaola, built in 1952 in memory of the miracle of the Cruz de Hierro of 1580. In 2020 the ironworks received a recognition from the association ASM International. The park also has a tourist office and a shop.
