About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación del Medio Marino de Peñas occupies the ground floor of the Cabo Peñas lighthouse, within the Paisaje Protegido del Cabo de Peñas (Cabo de Peñas Protected Landscape), in the municipality of Gozón. It opened to the public on 8 July 2005 as a permanent exhibition space.
Five rooms trace the history of lighthouses (the Peñas lighthouse is also one of the oldest weather observatories in Asturias), the shipwrecks and storms of the Cantabrian Sea, the sea off Cabo Peñas, its underwater biodiversity and a “window” onto the municipality of Gozón. The display combines graphic information, audiovisual media and special effects.
From the entrance of the centre to the edge of the cliffs runs a path of wooden boardwalks. It is an educational and environmental trail with panels on the archaeology, geology, flora, fauna and cetaceans of the protected landscape. The centre has been declared a “Centro Azul” (Blue Centre).
