About the museum

The Museo Juan Cabré opened in 1987 in Calaceite, the birthplace of the archaeologist and painter Juan Cabré Aguiló (1882–1947), regarded as one of the most important Spanish archaeologists of the 20th century. It is run by the Government of Aragon and was originally set up as a museum devoted to the life and work of Cabré. Over time it has grown into a cultural centre dedicated to archaeology, contemporary visual arts and ethnology.

It is housed in an 18th-century manor house, built in 1790 as a private residence in the historic centre and restored to accommodate the museum. The building has five floors: the first two display archaeological finds donated by Cabré's children, the first basement is used for temporary contemporary art exhibitions, and the second basement houses the ethnology section.

The collection includes tracings of Levantine rock paintings, a set of Iberian ex-votos and prehistoric, Roman and Hispano-Visigothic pieces. The museum also presents itself as a museum of Iberian dress and ethnology and reflects the Iberian culture of the Bajo Aragón region.
