About the museum
The church of Santiago, also known as La Antigua, is the oldest church in Béjar and dates back to the 12th century. It has a whitewashed apse and a simple tower, and inside it preserves a collection of religious art from the town.
The church houses the Museo de Arte Sacro, opened in October 2014. The exhibition brings together a 16th-century recumbent Christ in limestone, a 15th-century painting of the Virgen de la Antigua, an 18th-century high altarpiece, tombs, sculptures and liturgical vestments. The building has also been used for cultural events, such as the municipal nativity scene.
