About the museum
The museum is housed in the former church of San Gil, on the Plaza de Nicomedes Martín Mateos, and holds the core of the bequest that the sculptor Mateo Hernández, born in Béjar, left to the Spanish State shortly before his death. The collection brings together 51 works and is the best way to get to know the style of an artist who achieved international fame.
The works show above all animal sculpture, the genre that made him famous, with gorillas, orangutans, gazelles and wolfhounds, alongside portraits and human figures, the most notable of which is “La Bañista”. All are carved directly in very hard stones such as granite and have a highly recognisable polished finish. Other works by the artist are held in collections around the world.
The second floor of the building now houses works by other sculptors, such as the Béjar-born Francisco González Macías, and several of the pieces awarded at the sculpture biennials held in Béjar since 1994. The museum thus combines a monographic display on Mateo Hernández with a space open to contemporary sculpture.
