About the museum

Béjar has had a long textile tradition since the 13th century. In the mid-19th century the town had some 200 factories producing more than 750,000 varas (Spanish yards) of cloth and employing around 4,000 people. The museum pays tribute to that industrial history and was founded to preserve and promote the scientific and technical heritage generated by industry in Béjar.

To this end the town council acquired the San Albín estate, a former industrial complex on the northern slope of the town, beside the river and the San Albín bridge, where the company Tintes Gilart operated until recently. The complex consists of two buildings of two and three storeys joined by a central block that housed the hydraulic machinery. It retains a waterfall (salto de agua) with its own turbine, a very characteristic feature of the town's traditional factories.

Inside, more than 60 textile machines are displayed, along with a collection of some 80 large-format photographs of Béjar's factories, a display of sewing machines, the button sample book of the Emilio Muñoz García factory and several military uniforms. It is a good visit for understanding how work was organised in the cloth factories and how the power of water was harnessed.
